Rangers in the Great Smokies say a man from Apex, North Carolina died
after canoeing in the national park Thursday.
The whitewater group he was associated with says 53 year-old
Carter Worthington died from a medical condition. He was canoeing on the Little Pigeon River in the Greenbrier
section of the park.
Many people are attracted to our mountain rivers
especially for the 4th of July holiday. But even gentle rivers like the Tuckasegee can be
dangerous. Although its water level is regulated by a dam, recent rain can
bring invisible danger.
Leonard advises always floating on the
river with a partner, and avoiding alcohol.
River outfitters teach visitors about safety
“If you do fall into the water in fast moving water,
you're going to get in the white water swim position. And that’s nose up, toes
up, and look downstream,” says Nate Price who works as a raft guide at
Dillsboro River Outfitters in Jackson County.
Price says, “You're going to do this so you can push off
rocks and trees with your feet instead of hitting them with your head.”

come when people bring their own tube or raft and get on the water without the
guidance of a river company.
