MARION, N.C. -- A car slammed into the side of a McDowell County church about 3:30 Thursday afternoon.
No one was injured in the wreck. Thursday evening, Marion Police had not released the driver's name, said whether he will be charged or what may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Cross Mill Pentecostal Holiness Church on Reservoir Road was condemned by a city inspector within hours of the accident, according to Pastor Ronald Carpenter.
"If you go inside, the whole building is out of order," said Carpenter standing outside. "Light fixtures are down and in the basement the ceiling at this end of the hallway is a foot lower than it used to be."
The church has a congregation of about 100 members, and Wednesday afternoon, about a dozen people were helping to get instruments and any usable equipment out of the building, hoping to use it for a Sunday service elsewhere.
"Total shock," said Carpenter. "Some of the members, older ladies, have been by looking at it and they've just cried because they've been in this church all their lives."
The church has insurance, members are hoping the damage can be repaired the building reopened.
