HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. --A suspect is arrested and an off-duty reserve officer is suspended after a high-speed chase in Henderson County Friday afternoon.Just after 5 p.m. Highway Patrol troopers began to pursue a suspect after a hit and run accident near Howard Gap Road in Henderson County.After a lengthy pursuit, and off-duty reserve officer who heard the chase on a scanner spotted the vehicle and fired one round from his own shotgun.Soon after police were able to apprehend Jonathan Lyda of Hendersonville.Lyda has been charged with numerous felonies including fleeing police. The reserve deputy, who has not been identified, has been suspended pending and investigation by the District Attorney's Office. At approximately 5:10 PM the North Carolina State Highway Patrol initiated the pursuit of a suspected impaired driver on Howard Gap Road in Henderson County. The suspect vehicle had been identified as being in an earlier hit and run near the area. The pursuit continued outbound on Dana Road into an apple orchard near Hoots Drive. As the suspect vehicle came out of the apple orchard and started back inbound toward Hendersonville, law enforcement officers again began pursuing the suspect. The suspect fled into another apple orchard as the pursuit continued toward Old Dana Road. While on Old Dana Road, an off duty reserve deputy from the sheriff’s office, who had monitored the pursuit on a radio, fired one round from a personally owned shotgun and struck the fleeing vehicle as it came by his residence. Neither the driver of the vehicle nor any officers were injured by the shot. Approximately three minutes later at 5:29 pm, law enforcement officers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and Hendersonville Police Department, took the suspect into custody on Imperial Drive.
The reserve deputy was immediately placed on suspension pending the outcome of an internal investigation and review by the District Attorney’s office.
After the incident, Sheriff Charles McDonald stated, “I am always concerned when deadly force is used and we are thankful that the situation was controlled with no one being injured. That being said, fairness requires that this office make no further comment prior to the conclusion of the investigation and counsel with the District Attorney."
The suspect, Jonathan Keith Lyda, age 43 of 26 Imperial Drive in Hendersonville is facing numerous charges including felony fleeing to elude arrest. He is incarcerated under $18,300 bond in the Henderson County Detention Facility.
