More than 100 soldiers are safely back in the mountains this weekend.

The 211th Military Police Company out of Clyde returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. The unit deployed last November and has spent much of the year helping to train Afghan police and conduct convoy security operations.

Hundreds of friends and family gathered at the Asheville Regional Airport to welcome the soldiers home on Saturday. "This is a wonderful feeling today," said Robin Freeman. Her son Logan was deployed with the 211th on his first tour of duty.

"I'm very excited to be back with the family, back on North Carolina soil," Logan said. "Your family deploys with you. It's kind of a partnering task. While you are overseas they are also going through withdrawals from not seeing you."

"He's been safe...they've done a good job...and we're proud to have him back," said Glenn Freeman.

This was the 211th's second deployment since 2002.Soldiers Return Home
