More than 100 dog and cat lovers gathered in Spindale to hear animal rights advocates discuss ways of bringing up standards of care at the Rutherford County Animal Control Shelter.

The shelter has been under scrutiny for months but a July inspection reports notes significant improvements in the facility maintenance and care for animals up for adoption inside.

Still three non-profit groups in the county working to help dogs and cats are trying to get the attention of county leaders to increase funding and staff to the operation.

One advocate said the shelter needs a manager, and better attention to keeping facilities sanitary. Another said county commissioners have cut significant funding needed to successfully operate the shelter.

It was clear from the meeting, Tuesday night, there are various opinions on what needs to be done.

Some say the non-profits need to meet with county officials to start constructive dialogue and improve the facility which is small and sometimes overwhelmed with strays needing care.
