As a sailor for the Coast Guard, Alex Murray of Rutherfordton has traveled to everywhere from Australia to Antarctica.

Right now, his ship happens to be in Northern California. This weekend, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the vessel.

"It's 3:30 in the morning there, why is he texting us?," mother Joan Murray recalls.

Minutes after that Napa quake, she got the news before many of us heard about it.

"So pretty much we were all asleep and at 3:30 we got hit by the earthquake," the text reads.

We spoke to Alex by phone. He thought it was contractors who were making all the racket, not a quake.

"It kind of didn't feel right, and we heard the alarm go off when we realized it was an earthquake," he tells us.

His ship was unscathed, unlike many structures in the heart of Napa.
"A bunch of buildings are brick, and you can see cracks from the base all the way up," Alex says.

His mother knew, it must have been a powerful quake.

"When you're in a floating dry dock, normally you don't feel the ocean, you don't feel anything," Murray says.

Alex's mother and father both served in the Coast Guard.

"When he texts us about things that go on, we understand in the background some of the background that is going on from having been in the Coast Guard ourselves," Joan says.Local Sailor, Near CA Quake Epicenter
