Driving by the WNC Ag Center, you can't help but notice it's fair time once again. The Mountain State Fair opens Friday.

Vendors are putting the finishing touches on rides, exhibits, and games. Today, they're talking about safety.

There is a brand new tool keeping fair-goers safe this year. You're going to notice an adorable black lab walking around the fair grounds with Buncombe County Sheriffs Deputies. He's specially trained to detect weapons a person might be carrying on them. It's just one of the measures the community is taking to keep this fair safe. That's a big job this year because the Mountain State Fair reached record attendance last year, with more than 191,000 visitors over the ten days.

This year they're gearing up for another impressive showing, and that means closely inspecting each ride. You will find 40 rides at the fair this year and operators say the state of North Carolina keeps riders very safe. "This is the only state that I see that the inspectors will come to your rides and like this enterprise ride back behind me, the inspector will actually be there and he'll want to watch your people actually torque the bolts," says Owner of Drew Exposition, Jim Drew. They'll be inspecting rides throughout Thursday evening before opening time Friday. The health department has also signed off on each food vendor.

You'll also notice some new additions to the fair this year. One of them is a tower ride which takes people 105 feet in the air.
