A cyclist from Fairview survived a serious accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway and now the local biking community is helping her with an online fundraising effort.

Jaime Johnsen was at the end of a training ride at the Highway 74A intersection last Wednesday evening, when a car turned in front of her bicycle. She suffered a fractured skull, concussion, ligament tears and other injuries. Jaime's medical bills will be steep, so a fellow cyclist set up a account in her name and it is already paying off.

"Word travels fast, people get the word out that we have a rider down who needs help," says Stephen Janes. "It's basically a click of a button and enter your credit card and you help out as much as you can."

Jaime is overwhelmed by the support of the mountain cycling community.  "Just the outpouring with the latest events has been amazing," she says, "people I don't even know offering help has been just mind blowing." Jaime moved to Western North Carolina just two years ago and competes in mountain biking and cyclocross. It will be a while before she can return to her job at a local cycle shop, and also get back up on two wheels.
