An old section of South Tunnel Road in Asheville is getting a facelift.

Property developer Lyle Darnall has plans to turn the former K-Mart plaza into a new shopping and dining destination. Whole Foods Market will anchor the shopping plaza called Asheville Market. "It's taken seven and a half years to finally work something out with K-Mart where we were able to get this space back," he said.

In addition to Whole Foods, Darnall says the shopping center will also be home to  DSW, City Mac, Neo Burrito, jewelry store, and several unnamed restaurants.

"Tunnel Road has always had very cookie cutter type retailers, " Darnall said. We wanted the opportunity to do something different.

"There wasn't a location like this in East Asheville," said Jennifer Wozniak, a spokesperson for Whole Foods. "We are excited to be here and open our doors to this part of town."

Whole Foods opens at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Tunnel Road Shopping
