Mountain Community Loses Ambulance Service
The French Broad Fire Department is out of the ambulance business. It joins nine other Buncombe County Fire Districts to cut that service. All cite economic reasons. This puts more pressure on larger, surrounding districts to answer ambulance calls. French Broad and the others still operate first-responder units to treat patients until medical transport arrives. Buncombe County officials were given virtually no warning of French Broad's cancellation. Some residents are not pleased with the unexpected change.
