Return of Mammography

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:17 PM EDT
Topping today's "Health Alert", mammography has returned to MedWest Swain Hospital.

The new state-of-the-art digital machine brings breast imaging back to the Bryson City area.

The hospital years ago provided analog imagery, but had been without mammography in recent months.

This equipment will prevent local women from driving to Sylva, or beyond, for the potentially life-saving screening.

Sheila Matthes, cancer survivor, "we take care of our children, our husbands and our friends, but we can't afford to ignore ourselves."

Darlene Crisp, RT, Women's Imaging, "this is going to screen more and more women so that we can find breast cancers earlier and earlier... So that there will be a good outcome for their treatment."

The digital mammography came with a six-figure price tag.

It was paid for through grants, proceeds from a hospital thrift shop, and an investment from MedWest.Return of Mammography
