The Blood Connection

Updated: Friday, December 6 2013, 11:19 AM EST
When you think of blood, you might first think of the American Red Cross.  But, there is a relatively new provider of blood products to hospitals in Henderson County.

As Jay Siltzer shows us, The Blood Connection has opened up shop for donors.

Melanie Pace donates at the new Blood Connection Center in Hendersonville, "it's about giving back, and I really think it's crucial we all do our part."

But it's not only about blood at this collection site off the the Spartanburg Highway.

Paul Bixby, The Blood Connection, "we also do what we call pheresis which is we take platelets and units we can't do out on our regular mobile drives."

Carl Sly, Center Team Leader, "platelets take between an hour and an hour and a half to donate.  So the donor really takes the time to come to the center."

On any given day, The Blood Connection needs to collect more than 500 units for 3 counties in WNC, most of the Upstate and a portion of northeast Georgia.

"We never have enough. Literally. It's a challenge."

But one that Melanie helps meet for accident victims, cancer patients and anyone else requiring blood or blood products.

Officials with The Blood Connection say cost savings and availability were among the reasons Pardee Hospital and Park Ridge Health switched to its services.

The Blood Connection also provides blood for hospitals in Polk and Rutherford counties.  If you would like to donate, call (864) 255-5000 to make an appointment. The Blood Connection
