The National Wounded Warriors Amputee softball team plays Friday night at McCormick Field. All the money goes to Operation Welcome Home, a veteran's scholarship program. It will help men staying at the Veterans Restoration quarters and the women and children at the Steadfast House.
News 13's Person of the Week is one veteran who has turned his life around, and now is using his skills to help others.
Sam Hinton is a decorated soldier who fought and was wounded in Vietnam in 1969. His record tells a story of bravery and devotion. A soldier who with complete disregard for his own life, placed devastating fire on the enemy exposing himself to danger.
But time and time again, his search for the American dream often came up empty. It was a journey that finally brought him here that he learned something.
He was not only hired as the maintenance director for the restoration quarters, but gives of his spare time freely by volunteering for projects in the community. By working with others, he's learned something. He found that by helping his fellow veterans, he was actually helping himself.
