Toward the end of Monday's inaugural parade, Asheville High School's band had a moment to shine. They were the only band in North Carolina invited to the inauguration festivities.
Parents who couldn't make it to Washington, D.C. watched at Wild Wings downtown as the Asheville band made the 1.5 mile trek from the Capitol to the White House. The students were well prepared for this musical and physical challenge.
For moms and dads here in Asheville, they say it's almost surreal to see their sons and daughters make their way down the inaugural parade route.
Organizers say the $90,000 spent to make the trip to Washington, D.C. was worth every penny. 105 students played for President Obama. 17 chaperones also made the trip.
The band is directed by Will Talley, who says up until a couple of months ago he stressed to them, "this is a big deal."
The Asheville High Band was also honored with the title of "Grand Champion" over the weekend.
