Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:15 PM EDTOut of hundreds of entries for this year's Dynamite Dad contest, we're down to three finalists. The first is Kirk Lunsford from Old Fort. His nickname is "Big Daddy," but in reality everyone knows he's a "Mother Hen" when it comes to his three sons."A lot of kids out here don't even have a dad," says Kirk. "I see a lot of kids, who hit bumps in the road and they don't have anyone to stand for them. If you don't stand up for your kids nobody else will. "Four years ago, the kids found out how strong their father really is. On a rainy day, a trucker lost control of his rig on I-40 near Old Fort. Kirk, a Crooked Creek Volunteer firefighter was irst on the scene. A car drove him into a wall, leaving Kirk with severely fractured legs, a broken hand, and a bruised liver."In my mind, I thought my legs had been cut off. So I rolled over and started looking for my legs," he said back in 2009. Kirks legs had multiple fractures.... and he also had a broken hand and bruised liver."He protected that patient on the mountain," says his wife Shawnah. "And he gave so unselfishly of himself. It's just a great testimony of his faith, commitment and compassion."One year after the accident, Kirk finally took steps again. "Just seeing you come through the things you've been through you know it makes me see there's nothing in life I won't be able to overcome," son Bryan tells Kirk."I ain't figured out my favorite superhero but he's a good one to pick ha ha," says the youngest, Adam. "He's been through the ringer but he's been there beside us since we were little." Maybe he's Superman but the pictures tell us about more than just superhuman strength. The portrait of a big daddy... With an even bigger heart."I just hope there as proud of me, as I am of them," Kirk says with tears in his eyes. The winner of our Dynamite Dad contest will be announced later in the week.
