Asheville Police Department Press Conference

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:21 PM EDT

We’re learning new details in a wreck involving Asheville Police Chief William Anderson's son.

Chad Anderson was in the car, which was registered to his father, when a mystery driver known only as “Dianty” crashed into a median in Montford early Saturday morning and ran away.  Chad Anderson is charged with failure to report an accident in a timely manner.

During a news conference this afternoon, Chief Anderson admitted he let personal feelings get in the way and should have called the Highway Patrol to investigate his son's crash.  The chief also said he met with the officers involved in the investigation, as well as his command staff, and apologized to them.  He also responded to questions about possible resignations in the department, and said there were no employment actions as a result of this incident.

Chief Anderson also confirmed there was a gun in the car and that his son legally owned it.  But he would not say whether his son had been drinking before the crash, saying it was part of the SBI investigation.

Assistant City Manager Jeff Richardson also appeared at the press conference and said the city's own review is continuing and is important in mainting the "checks and balances", and maintaining the public's trust in the police department.  When asked if a summary of the SBI's findings would be made public, neither Anderson nor Richardson would commit to doing so.  The results of SBI investigations are typically not made public.
