Proposed Dispatch Center Closing

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:22 PM EDT

A money-saving plan by Governor Pat McCrory could move Asheville's Highway Patrol dispatchers out of the mountains. As we've reported, the plan is to move them to a communications center to Hickory.

A former state trooper thinks a plan to close the Asheville communications center is a bad idea.  Retired 1st Sgt. Michael Brock spent over 20 years patrolling the mountains. He says the idea of not having dispatchers with local knowledge of the mountains could cause problems for officers out patrolling the roads. He hopes the legislature will find other places to cut and keep Asheville's center open.

The cuts are not final. They will only be approved if Governor McCrory's budget is.
