Food Stamp Funding Cuts Hit WNC
Updated: Friday, November 1 2013, 10:13 PM EDT
Effective Friday, food stamps for every household nationwide will be cut by about five percent. A 2009 stimulus benefit that added more funding to the SNAP Program expired. In Western North Carolina, one in twelve people use food stamps. Statewide, nearly all households collecting include children. In North Carolina, the cuts will affect 51,000 veterans and 69% of those impacted are elderly or disabled. The cuts will be reflected in the November SNAP stipend.
