Main Street Makeover

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:22 PM EDT
Hendersonville city officials say construction on the third and final phase of Main Street improvements will take longer than originally planned.  The city's engineer says bad weather and additions to the project will push the completion about a month behind.

Downtown merchants have put up signs alerting shoppers that stores remain open despite all the construction equipment and the street closing.  Merchants we talked to say the weather hasn't been on the workers side and they understand the delay.  Some had  hoped the work would be finished before warm weather and tourists arrived.  But shop owners welcome the improvements saying Main Street will be much more inviting.

The project began at the south end of the street in 2011 with two blocks undergoing improvements at a time during the past winters.  The $4 million in total renovations are now slated to be completed sometime in June.
