Renewable Energy Law

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:22 PM EDT
A Rutherford county state lawmaker wants to stop giving tax breaks to the renewable energy industry.  Representative Mike Hager, a former Duke Energy engineer says it's time to stop asking taxpayers to pay for the renewable industry.  He says the industry should stand on it's own without government and taxpayers support.

Hager and other republicans have introduced legislation to end the 2007 law that requires North Carolina utilities companies to use renewable energy and promote energy conservation programs.

Green Energy supporters say repealing the policy will hurt families by reducing jobs and cost the state more money in the long run by continuing its dependency on fossil fuels.
