Special Report: Evidence Room Changes story image
News 13 goes inside the Asheville Police evidence room after obtaining photos and an internal audit of the evidence room with our partners at Carolina Public Press.  The audit reveals a tight space that's "orderly but organized," according to Chief William Anderson.

Also:  Asheville's police chief hires a new manager for the departments embattled property room.
The property room has been plagued with problems, including missing drugs and weapons, poor record keeping, and an ongoing SBI probe.
After considering a hundred applicants, the chief hired Timothy Scapin from the Pinellas County, Florida, sheriff's office.
It was just one of several updates from the chief about a property room with a troubling past.
Chief Anderson says he's been hard at work.. making improvements and frequent inspections at the evidence room..
The evidence room was the subject of a scathing report last July to Ashville City Council members.
An independent audit revealed missing items, poor record keeping and piles of clutter.
Anderson says those problems have been addressed and he's now waiting on the district attorneys office and the SBI who are still investigating, "we know what happened in our property room , not only do we know what happened we know how it happened and who's responsible."
The chief says hiring Timothy Scapin, who's specially trained in this area, will help restore integrity and respect to the property room.
Scapin's salary will be just over $50,500 a year.  He starts his new job March 4th.
