Asheville Building Collapse Investigation
Updated: Friday, January 25 2013, 04:58 PM EST
More details are being released about Thursday's building collapse in downtown Asheville. Building safety officials now say it could have been caused by workers removing walls inside the structure.
Demolition crews brought in heavy equipment Friday to clean up tons of shattered brick and wood framing at 15 Carolina Lane near Lexington Avenue.
Building safety officials say removing walls and other demolition were never covered by any city-issued permits required by law in the state building code. They told the owner last September the building needed work. The owner made an application to replace a cover for the courtyard behind the restaurant, but it was not approved.
Building safety officials say the restaurant and stores near the demolition site could reopen after safety issues are resolved.
