Biomass March

Updated: Tuesday, April 23 2013, 07:01 AM EDT

Hundreds march to try and stop an industrial project in Transylvania County. The group walked to the Transylvania County Commission meeting Monday to express their opposition to a proposed biomass energy plant.

The proposed plant would use wood, household trash and agricultural waste. It would be converted to gas fuel to power generators. The electricity would then be sold to Duke Energy.

The plant may be built where the Transylvania County Airport now stands. The owner of the airport has signed an option to sell his property to the developer. The community is concerned that the proposed plant would be near the French Broad River, posing even more environmental issues.

Despite calls for action, commissioners don't actually have any authority over the project because there are no land use rules for the county.
