Call For Recycling Bins Downtown

Asheville is known for being a green city, but some say there is always room for improvement. Local businesses owners want to start a recycling program in downtown. They've created a Facebook page, Recycle Asheville, to drum up support. The group wants to see city council start a downtown recycling program by next year.
Ty Hallock says he got the idea for a downtown recycing program five years ago. He says a recycling program seems obvious in a sustainable city like Asheville and wants city council to have a bin on every block by 2014.
"Looking toward the future, we would like this to be Green City USA. A beacon for other people to be looking at Asheville and say they've really taken some steps in sutainability," said Hallock.
Asheville already has a recycling program for homes and businesses. Now Hallock hopes to drum up enough support to draft a formal proposal for downtown.
Franzi Charen says Asheville's Business Improvement District has also tossed around the idea of recycling.
"Everything we have going is in a sustainable direction. Recycling would reflect that idea," said Charen.
