Cherokee Death Investigation

Updated: Tuesday, March 26 2013, 07:09 AM EDT

Cherokee police say it may take several weeks before they can release the cause of death of an Arkansas woman found dead last week. Media reports from Arkansas identify the victim as 20-year-old Cassandra Carter.

She was reported missing on March 13th. Cassandra's mother told the authorities she was last seen earlier that morning with a man named Kevin Bolton. A week after her disappearance, Bolton was arrested in Cherokee after a short police chase that ended on Stillwell Branch Road. He was allegedly driving the car with Carter's body in the trunk.

Bolton is facing a number of charges including failure to report death. However Bolton is not charged in her death at this time. He is still being held at the Jackson County Detention Center.

Carter's body was taken to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. Authorities says it is complete, but they are not releasing those results.
