Chestnut Street Pedestrian Plan

Updated: Wednesday, February 26 2014, 11:28 PM EST
A busy Asheville neighborhood is getting some much needed upgrades.
The Five Points neighborhood near downtown will be much safer for pedestrians. The city will be widening sidewalks and adding crosswalks to make it easier for people to get around. Especially for Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's right up the road.

People who live in the neighborhood say the improvements are much needed.

"It is definitely busy. It's gotten a lot more traffic. We just have to wait, there is constant traffic. I think it would be really helpful to have crosswalk," said Rebecca Odom.

Neighbors say it's hard to navigate around Chestnut Street. Heavy, speeding traffic makes it dangerous traveling on foot or by car.

The city of Asheville plans to build a crosswalk on East Chestnut Street at the intersection of Holland and Maxewell Streets.

The construction is being funded by the Harris Teeter project. Construction will begin this spring and is expected to be completed by the end of June.Chestnut Street Pedestrian Plan
