College Merger Called Off

Updated: Tuesday, February 25 2014, 07:31 PM EST
A merger between a mountain university and a Georgia school will not happen.

Trustees on the board at Point University voted Monday night not to merge with Montreat College. It cites legal issues and concerns about the merger within the Montreat College family. Students, alumni and faculty had spoken out against the merger. But the college's Board of Trustees, who are facing financial trouble, were still pursuing the deal.

"The college does need money, but we aren't boxed in - and boxers know that they're not done and they've lost and we haven't lost yet," said Winston Rheinbolt.

The faculty has issued a vote of no confidence in the Board of Trustees and requested that all the trustees who voted for the merger to step down. There is a board meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 1st to address that request.
