Courthouse Trees Coming Down

Eleven sugar maples around the historic Haywood County Courthouse in Waynesville will be coming down. A tree expert says the trees are diseased or dead and pose a danger to both people and the courthouse.
Commissioners have voted to have them cut down and replace them with other landscaping. One tree will be spared, a tall spruce near Depot Street. The news saddens residents who've seen these maples for decades.
Wood from the trees will go to a firewood assistance program to help the needy in Haywood County stay warm during the winter months.
