Troopers have released the name of a victim who died in a burning truck that crashed on a Madison County highway. 61-year-old Robert Duncan of Parrotville, TN died when his truck hit a rock cliff at the intersection of US 25/70 and NC-208.
A witness tells News 13 it doesn’t appear Duncan attempted to slow down as he hit the rocks at a high rate of speed. There are no skid marks on the road where the truck crashed and burst into flames. It appears the truck missed a yield sign and drove straight into the cliff.
There are plenty of warning signs for eastbound drivers as they descend a steep mountain road headed to a sharp right-turn intersection. In addition to three sections of rumble strips cars must drive over, there are bright yellow “yield” signs and a “t” sign.
Troopers say after talking with Duncan’s family, there’s no indication the crash was intentional. They say the investigation will be hampered by the intense fire that followed the wreck.
