Dog Ownership Dispute

Updated: Monday, January 7 2013, 05:00 PM EST

A Fletcher woman says her veterinarian gave her dog away after she left it at his office. However, the vet says he found the dog a good home when the woman insisted it be put down.

Barbara Nesbitt says her 3-year-old pug suffered serious skin problems that left the dog with sores on its body. She admits she gave the dog to Veterinarian Patrick Galligan at Fletcher Animal Hospital last month out of frustration. The next day, she changed her mind only to find the vet had placed the dog with a family.

Galligan says Nesbitt wanted the dog to be put down, which she denies. The vet says the dog could be cured. He also says since Nesbitt gave the dog to him, he found the pug a home before Christmas.

Nesbitt has taken out ads offering $1,000 to the family for the return of the dog. She also filed a complaint with the state's Veterinary Medical Board.

Dr. Galligan says he’s prepared to defend his actions before that board. Officials say they will respond to the complaint next week.
