Driver Of Fatal Wreck Faces Charges

The driver of a Yancey County Transportation Authority van faces charges after it ran off the road and burst into flame. As we reported Tuesday, the van crashed east of Burnsville, killing 48-year-old Billy Grindstaff. The driver and three children survived
The county manager says 36-year-old Christie Boyer had been driving for the authority for just over two years. Troopers say Boyer and a driver who stopped to help managed to get three children aged 4, 5, and 6, out of their car seats and away from the fire. They struggled to free Grindstaff because his foot was trapped in the wreckage. He died in the fire.
Troopers say they’re still investigating how this accident happened. They say there’s no indication any other vehicle was involved, or that Boyer swerved to avoid something in the road.
Boyer and the children were taken to the hospital and were treated for cuts and abrasions. They suffered no life-threatening injuries.
Troopers say charges against Boyer are pending after they receive a blood test analysis.
