Dupont Permit Proposal

Updated: Wednesday, February 26 2014, 09:43 PM EST
A proposal to keep visitors out of a local forest at night is causing controversy.

There are no posted hours at the Dupont State Recreational Forest in Transylvania County. But, the forest supervisor says, that may change.

The idea is to ban visitors from the forest an hour after sunset, unless that visitor has a permit to stay.  The goal is to deter illegal activity in the forest at night.  But those who use the forest for recreational use, such as biking after dark, aren't happy with the proposed change.

"It's one place I go often to night ride and to take that away from us is kind of crappy," say Sam Salmon, Hub and Pisgah Tavern Owner.

The forest supervisor says this is the only state park in the state without posted hours.  He says posting hours has been a forest rule since 2009, but it's never been implemented.Dupont Permit Proposal
