Ex-Cop Guilty of Child Abuse

Updated: Thursday, February 21 2013, 09:48 PM EST
Ex-Asheville Police officer Aubrey Green came clean in Buncombe County District Court Thursday when he admitted physically abusing a 3-year-old girl left in his care.  News 13 broke the story last November when the five year Asheville police veteran was arrested along with his girlfriend, the young victim's mother, Maggie Jones.

"You can't beat someone to a pulp or to when they have very bad bruises or permanent injuries," said district attorney Ron Moore.  Prosecutors say that's what the evidence shows in this case, including pictures of the girl with severe bruises on her bottom.  That's why Green and Jones pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor child abuse.

"Child abuse, unfortunately, cuts across all social strata," Ilene Procida said.  Procida has been a child abuse therapist for over 20 years.  She said even police officers, sworn to uphold the law, are capable of abusing a child.  "It affects everybody.  It can be somebody who you think is the most upstanding citizen."

Jones also pleaded guilty to failing to report the abuse.  "Again, that's very common.  Complicity with the abuser happens more often than any of us want to realize," said Procida.

The couple avoided jail time, but they must do 24 hours of community service and pay a hundred dollar fine.  They must also keep the child in therapy.  Additionally for Green, this conviction means he'll never be a cop again.
