Ex-Prison Guard Holds Family Hostage, Shoots at Cops

Updated: Wednesday, December 12 2012, 07:34 AM EST

A domestic dispute in Marion forced a neighborhood evacuation and led to a hostage standoff between a former prison guard and McDowell County sheriff's deputies.  Authorities say 24-year-old Patrick Loftin also fired a shot at responding officers.

The drama unfolded around 10 a.m. Monday in the 100-block of Riverbend Road.

News 13's Mario Boone was told the domestic disturbance erupted between Loftin and his mother.  Deputies say threats were made and a weapon brandished. That's when Loftin's mother took his two young children and locked themselves in the basement while calling 911.

Deputies say no one was hurt when Loftin allegedly opened fire on them.  The standoff ended peacefully when negotiators convinced Loftin to give up.

Loftin was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.  Charges are pending.
