Fighting Wildfires

Updated: Friday, February 28 2014, 03:53 PM EST
Wildfires are popping up across the mountains. The North Carolina Forest Service says they've dealt with eight fires in Western North Carolina Thursday and expect that number to grow.

The Forest Service says dry, windy conditions made the fires hard to contain. It took them hours to get small fires under control.

A 12-acre brush fire broke out near Bat Cave Thursday afternoon. When fire fighters got the call, they say only an acre and half was burning. It didn't take long for the fire to spread. The flames burned a yard and melted siding on a house.

The Forest Service says the wind made fighting the fire an uphill battle.

"The winds have compromised our efforts a little bit, low humidity, high wind, biggest challenge," said Greg Smith.
A smaller brush fire broke out in northern Buncombe County near Jupiter this afternoon. No damage was reported, but the fire did come within several feet of three homes.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation. The Forest Service says people should also use this as a reminder to be extra cautious this year and not burn garbage or leaf piles.Fighting Wildfires
