Fire Destroys Homes, Spreads To Woods

Updated: Tuesday, February 25 2014, 07:23 AM EST
Fire destroys two homes in Buncombe County and crews had to scramble to keep neighboring houses from the fast-moving flames. The fire is under control, but was still smoldering Monday night.

The fire started along Sky High Drive off US 70 just outside Black Mountain. The two properties destroyed Monday afternoon are located on a steep, heavily-wooded mountainside. One of the structures burned to the ground. Only the chimney is left standing. The walls of the home right next door are still there, but it's otherwise gutted.

Nearly 30 firefighters worked to keep flames confined to the buildings, but the trouble spread beyond. The nearby woods caught fire. State Forest Service crews were called-in and cut fire-breaks and cleared away dry brush. They were able to save the next home sitting right in the path of advancing flames.

Both the county fire marshal and arson investigators say it's too early to determine the cause of the fire. We do know that dry and windy conditions made the fire a tough one to fight.

No one was inside the summer homes at the time of the fire.Fire Destroys Homes, Spreads To Woods
