Flooding In Western Counties
Updated: Tuesday, January 15 2013, 07:42 PM EST
All this rain has the ground saturated and many of our rivers and
creeks spilling over their banks, especially in our western counties.
Long
Creek Road in Robbinsville in Graham County has seen flooding. Highway
19 in Jackson County near the Cherokee Reservation had a mudslide and
another near Black Camp Gap Road outside Maggie Valley.
In
Bryson City, a culvert along Water Street backed up, sending water
rushing through a small trailer park, literally eroding the land
underneath a handful of trailers. The county building inspector has
condemned them and rescue crews had to come in and take the residents to
safety. The DSS found motel rooms for them to stay in, but residents
wonder how long they have to stay out of their homes. Also, if they'll
have to pay out of their own pockets.
Emergency experts are
keeping an eye on creeks and rivers ranging from Haywood to Graham
counties and everything in between and remind drivers not to drive
through standing water.
