Food Stamp Delay

Updated: Friday, April 12 2013, 10:00 PM EDT

Some Haywood County residents say it's taking too long to get their food stamps. The state is implementing a new computer system called "NC Fast." In the end, it's supposed to be more efficient. But Haywood County’s DSS says the state is making software changes leading to 67 delays out of 14 hundred applications between November and March.

Emma English says, “But that still doesn't help put food on the table especially if you have health issues".

Haywood DSS Director Ira Dove says,  “We have hired some temporary labor to help with the conversion process.  Our staff is working overtime.” Dove recommends getting your food stamp re-certification early until the system is streamlined.

Emma English suggests checking your food stamp balance before going to the grocery store to avoid any embarrassment at check-out.
