Highway 226 Reopened In Mitchell Co.

Updated: Wednesday, January 23 2013, 07:11 AM EST

A landslide removes a mountain highway's support that required five days of repairs for crews and detours for residents. It happened last week on Highway 226 north of Bakersville in Mitchell County.

Highway 226 is a road residents use to get to work in Johnson City and other towns in Tennessee. The road has been closed since Friday to allow workers to rebuild a slope that keeps the pavement from falling into the river. Highway 226 is now reopened to drivers.

Engineers say they had a rough time with this repair. The road's shoulder fell down the bank and into the river, forcing them to create a new one with heavy boulders. They wrapped up the work Tuesday morning by removing trees that had collapsed during the slide.

A similar problem on Highway 197 will also have to be fixed. A excavator is headed to the site Wednesday. The road will not be closed while crews make the repair.
