Attempted Armed Robbery Chase

Updated: Monday, February 18 2013, 07:49 PM EST

An attempted armed robbery at a fast food restaurant in Haywood County turns into a chase. At least two Waynesville Police cars were rammed by the suspect. No injures were reported.

What started with a gun drawn at the McDonald's on Russ Avenue in Waynesville ended on Main Street in Canton near the paper mill. Police say the high-speed chase took them up and down Highway 74 and I-40. Then a u-turn by the suspect that took-out two police cars. He finally wrecked his own car right downtown Canton about 25 miles from where it all began.

Chief Hollingsed says workers at the McDonald's were lucky too, and smart. He says they saw the gun and moved quickly to the back of the store where the suspect could no longer see them. That's when he fled.

The car the suspect was driving shows on police computers as being stolen Sunday from GreEnville. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
