Hominy Creek Fuel Cleanup

Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 08:40 PM EST
Remnants of Friday's oil spill into Hominy Creek are still visible as cleanup efforts  continue.

Nearly 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from an above gallon storage tank at a facility off Smoky Park Highway owned by APAC-Harrison, a road construction company.

About 3,000 gallons made its way out of the containment area and possibly into Hominy Creek, but it is not known at this time how much actually reached the creek.

Crews from the company, the state division of environment and natural resources, and the EPA today continued cleanup efforts on site. They also traveled up and down the river in boats, sopping up the oil sheen and maintaining these booms.

DENR says it is too early to know what the danger is to the creek. They have not seen any fish kills yet, but they are not sure what the marine or sediment impact will be long-term.

DENR also said that the company is working closely with them to do everything they can to cleanup. They say there may be fines coming for the company from DENR itself or the EPA, but it is too early to say when or if that might happen.Hominy Creek Fuel Cleanup
