Jason Collins Sparks One-On-One Local Debate

Updated: Tuesday, April 30 2013, 10:00 PM EDT
After Jason Collins shocked the NBA world and beyond by revealing that he's gay in a Sports Illustrated essay, we found two friends going one-on-one at Reuters YMCA.

In a way, it was a window into the discussion across America.

"Everybody has their own opinion. I think people should do whatever they feel," said Alfredo Pizarro, playing a pick-up game with his buddy Marion Keith.

Keith hadn't heard the news about Collins and was shocked.

"I don't think it's a good thing at all cause now everybody thinks it's okay to be gay," says Keith. "And I don't think it's okay. I really don't. "

Pizarro disagreed.

"Some people might be shocked like my friend Marion, and may not wanna work with him anymore. Or some people will accept it." he says.

Reverend Jasmine Beach-Ferrara of the Campaign for Southern Equality is not surprised by the one-on-one exchange.
"Anytime someone comes out, you expect a spectrum of responses," she says. "But it's also how the conversation gets started and moves forward."Jason Collins Sparks One-On-One Local Debate
