Judge Finds "Choose Life" Plates Unconstitutional

A federal judge says North Carolina's plan to offer an anti-abortion license plate is unconstitutional.
Judge James Fox says the state can't offer that viewpoint without also offering similar plates supporting abortion rights. North Carolina lawmakers authorized the "choose life" plate in 2011, but defeated amendments would have also authorized plates saying "respect choice."
The ACLU sued the state calling it a violation of free speech. The North Carolina Attorney General's Office hasn't decided whether to appeal the judge's decision. Republican Rep. Mitch Gillespie of McDowell County sponsored the bill and says he'll encourage the state to appeal.
