Late Start Called Too Late?

Updated: Wednesday, March 6 2013, 10:05 PM EST

Wednesday morning McDowell County students were already on the school bus when administrators called a two-hour delay.

The district says they were forced to make the late decision after winter weather in several remote communities suddenly turned worse.

But some parents are saying the cautionary late start call should have been made earlier, and that the district put kids at risk by deciding when kids were already on icey mountain roads.

When the late start was called buses had to turn around and drop kids back off at their homes, in remote areas on slick backroads in the thick of the bad weather.

"With all the drama in schools these days, the safety issues, the weather should not be a problem," said Mcdowell County mom Haley Ward. "We shouldn't have to worry if our kids are going to get to school safe by riding the bus."
