40 children in need from four Mitchell County schools got a police escort inside Walmart in Spruce Pine today. Each received $250 to spend on clothes and toys, with the help of an officer.
The 5th annual "Shop With The Cops" is fueled by donations from local and state law enforcement.
"They're in shock!" says Spruce Pine Police officer Kasey Cook, who organizes the event. "It's a blessing to see them smile and having fun."
"That's really nice of them to do that for kids," said one of the kids, Jada. She shopped for a mermaid Barbie, among other things.
The youngsters were required to buy clothes like jackets and coats with some of the cash, but how they spent the rest was up to them.
One boy, Damion, made sure he bought a couple of things for his brothers. "Because it's the nice thing to do," he stressed. "And it's close to Christmas."
