A local family is celebrating the life of a woman who lived to be 108. Johnnie Mae McCorkle passed away at her home on Monday in Asheville. Her loved ones say it might have been her love for buttermilk and cornbread that kept her living so long. That's what she told her family when she turned 100.
McCorkle's nephews say their aunt was extremely special and her legacy will live on forever. James Whitesides and James Michael remember her being generous and caring.
The two believe it was her active lifestyle that also kept her going all these years. McCorkle even walked from the Vanderbilt Apartments to the YMCA to kick off "Active Aging Week." McCorkle was also a very active member in her church.
Services for Johnnie Mae McCorkle will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Friday. Her visitation will begin at 11 a.m. followed by her funeral at noon.
