Making Up Snow Days

Updated: Friday, February 21 2014, 08:11 PM EST
Last week's winter weather has forced Saturday classes and longer school days.

Mitchell County surveyed parents and students and found out they preferred to lengthen the school day to make up all the snow days. Mitchell County lost 15 days to bitter cold temperatures and days of snowfall. Parents and students rejected Saturday classes and using up days in Spring Break to replace the lost days.

Beginning March 10th, school officials will add 30 minutes to each school day Mondays through Thursdays. That adds about five minutes to each class here at mitchell high school.

"We're hoping for warmer and dryer weather, that's what we're all crossing our fingers about, but I think with the plan we have in place, is the best we can do for our students and providing the most instructional time in our classrooms as well," said superintendent Dr. Rick Spurling.
School officials say it's much more difficult to add school days to the end of the year. That would force school leaders to re-schedule testing and graduation. There's one hitch in the longer school day plan. If Mitchell County is hit with another snowstorm, students could have to make up those days in Saturday sessions.Making Up Snow Days
