Man Killed After Being Dragged 4.5 Miles

Updated: Tuesday, January 15 2013, 08:05 AM EST

An accident claims the life of a pedestrian in Asheville Monday night. The man was struck multiple times as he walked along Tunnel Road.

His body was then dragged for about 4.5 miles. It all started near the VA Hospital in East Asheville. The vehicle dragging the body finally stopped at the corner of Charlotte Street and college Street near downtown Asheville.

Police say the victim was hit in the 1300 block of Tunnel Road near the Blue Ridge Parkway around 7 p.m.

The driver of that vehicle got out, but then at least one other vehicle struck the man again while he was lying on the pavement. Investigators say it was a second or third driver who kept going. The driver dragging the body thought the vehicle had a flat tire.

Authorities have not released the identification of the victim at this time.

Police say it appears the deadly incident was a tragic accident, but their investigation continues.
