Prescription Drug Dangers

Updated: Wednesday, April 17 2013, 07:10 AM EDT

One out of three drug-related deaths in Haywood County have been due to prescription drugs. In an effort to curb that number, law enforcement held a special meeting Tuesday night. They are trying to get the word out about the dangers that are involved with prescription drugs.

Waynesville's police chief Bill Hollingsed expressed to folks that prescription drugs are very dangerous, very addicting and they're causing a lot of deaths in the community. The meeting was also a way to let people know how they or their family members can get help. It's the hope of authorities that residents take the information they received about prescription drug abuse and spread it to others.

Chief Hollingsed is also encouraging the community to get active. He says folks can contact their local legislators about several proposed bills that could help control prescription drug abuse.

Local law enforcement is also concerned about synthetic drugs. They say in addition to prescription drugs, synthetic drugs are also becoming a problem in the community- especially with young people.
