Reducing Pot Penalties

Updated: Monday, May 13 2013, 09:37 PM EDT
Lawmakers in Raleigh have taken up a bill to reduce penalties for possession of marijuana.  The bill passed its first reading and has been sent to committee for further review.

The measure would reduce the current penalties for possessing an ounce or less of marijuana from a class 3 misdemeanor  punishable by up to a $1000 in fines and a suspended sentence to a civil infraction similar to a traffic ticket.

Opponents say it's another attempt to tear down our culture and push the burden of an individual's drug abuse onto society.  But supporters say marijuana is a medicine that's harmless and costing the courts and legal system large sums of money.
